Biltmore Ball Gown

ByJessica Wellington 3 Comments November 16, 2012

If you read my blog, you’ll know that Biltmore is one of my favorite places. To read about my visit, click here. During my trip late last year, I purchased this plant, Biltmore Ball Gown. It is a tropical shrub that blooms pretty much all year. It is also known by the names Flowering Maple, Chinese Lantern and Parlor Maple.

I love it because it looks just like the bottom of a ball gown a woman would have worn to a fancy event at Biltmore Estate with the Vanderbilts. My plant barely made the long car ride home from Asheville, North Carolina, to Houston, Texas. I only have a small piece of it now. I hope to visit Biltmore again and buy a bigger plant.

What a beautiful flower and a very perfect name. 🙂 Thank you for sharing. I had never heard of this bush or its blooms.

I just purchased a Biltmore ‘Ball Gown’ yesterday! I’m thinking of keeping it in a pot on my deck so I can bring it indoors over winter. How is yours doing? Any suggestions? I’m in zone 7 – Maryland.

I kept mine in a pot and brought it in during the winter months. Unfortunately, mine got eaten by tiny bugs and didnt make it. Whenever I return to Biltmore, I plan on buying another one.
