The Reluctant Dancing Queen

ByJessica Wellington Leave a Comment November 17, 2011

My two year old is taking dance classes-and no, I am definitely not a dance mom, far from it. Everything was going great until I was informed that during her first recital I would have to be her dance partner. Yes, I have to dance with my daughter on stage in front of all of my peers. Sure, I took dance classes when I was younger but that was a very long time ago.

The last time I willingly danced in public was at a junior high dance when one of my classmates came up to me and asked me if what I was doing hurt. Evidently, I dance like Elaine from Seinfeld and had no idea. As a result, I have been very reluctant to dance in public. My husband says it was like pulling teeth to get me to dance at my own wedding. So, dancing with my daughter will be a huge endeavor for me.

To make matters worse, whenever we do the routine, my daughter, in her excitement, does everything but the dance. We’ve practiced, had dress rehearsals and I am always left dancing alone, while she runs around the stage area. At this point I have two options: either hold her arms like a puppet and have her do the dance with me or let her do her own thing while I dance my heart out alone. I haven’t decided yet. Either way, it will be an experience that I will never forget. I know my husband will memorialize it forever on video and threaten to show it every time we have a public gathering.  Regardless, my daughter will have undeniable proof that I am definitely the world’s best mother.
