During my last trip to Best Buy, I was stunned to see a section of space designated for drones. I’ve heard about drones, seen them online but haven’t actually encountered one in person.

Leave it to Best Buy to start stocking the shelves with one of this year’s cutting edge gadgets. On June 8, just in time for Father’s Day, the 3DRobotics Solo Drone arrived on store shelves. It retails for $999.

I know any guy would be thrilled to receive this drone on Father’s Day. Personally, I wouldn’t mind receiving one as a gift!

Sure, you could get your father or husband a tie, or a nice pair of socks, but why not really surprise him this year? Unlike many typical Father’s Day gifts, this one is a really exciting option.

Imagine your husband or father’s face as he opened a box containing a super cool 3DRobotics Solo Drone. My husband would be ecstatic.

For starters, this isn’t just any ordinary drone. It’s the first ever drone to be powered by two integrated Linux computers. This design makes it super easy to capture the perfect shot.

If you don’t understand how the two Linux computers work, let me explain. The Solo is so smart, it contains one computer inside the drone and another in the controller. They are connected via a dedicated Wi-Fi signal. This allows the drone to fly itself, while you focus on shooting the ultimate image. The Solo is an all-in-one drone that gives you the ability to stream live HD video from your GoPro directly to your mobile device.

Here are some of my favorite features:

  • Works with a GoPro camera.
  • Push-button flight makes the drone get off of the ground quickly.
  • Computer assisted Smart Shots and the GoPro frame allow you to capture professional quality aerial photos and video in Full HD.
  • The controller features a video game-style design making it easier to operate.
  • The controller has a pause button that lets you stop the Solo midflight.
